How humans and AI work together

What is a system of intelligence?

A system of intelligence is a living layer that combines data, institutional knowledge, context, signals, reasoning, and feedback to help people and AI decide what to do next. Unlike a system of record, which primarily stores what happened, a system of intelligence interprets what is known and connects that understanding to coordinated action.

In one sentence

A system of record remembers; a system of intelligence helps decide.

Why it matters

Companies already have systems that store customers, campaigns, support tickets, product usage, contracts, and content. The problem is that no single system understands how those fragments relate to the company’s strategy or the decision at hand.

In GTM, a system of intelligence should connect market context, customer knowledge, brand, evidence, active work, and performance signals. It should not replace source systems. It should make them useful together.

How it works

  1. Connect trusted systems of record and explicit company knowledge.
  2. Maintain current definitions of customers, strategy, brand, and goals.
  3. Interpret new signals in that context.
  4. Recommend or initiate the next best action.
  5. Observe results and update what the system believes.

Original example

A CRM shows that a deal was lost. Call transcripts reveal that the buyer could not distinguish the product from an incumbent. Web data shows that comparison-page visits are rising. A system of intelligence connects those facts to the positioning strategy, identifies a repeated differentiation problem, recommends updating sales proof and the comparison page, and tracks whether win rates change in the affected segment.

What people get wrong

A dashboard is not a system of intelligence. Neither is a search box on top of a document repository. Intelligence requires interpretation, context, feedback, and a path from insight to action. The phrase itself is broad and used differently across technology categories, so every product claiming it should explain exactly what knowledge it combines, what decisions it improves, and how it learns.

Scott’s take

I use GTM system of intelligence for what I believe is the missing layer in modern go-to-market work: a shared, living understanding of the company that humans and agents can use together. Most GTM software either records activity or executes a narrow task. The opportunity is to connect what the company knows with what it should do—and help finish the work.
