Brand Humanity™

The more AI can do, the more humanity matters.

Brand Humanity is the practice of building brands rooted in what makes us human, and the humans who make them authentic.

It is a philosophy and operating framework Anthony Kennada and I created for building companies people trust, feel, remember, and choose, while protecting the judgment, creativity, relationships, and human beings behind the work.

Co-created by Scott Salkin and Anthony Kennada.

What it is

Brand is every interaction your company has with the world.

Brand Humanity starts with a simple idea: a brand is not confined to a logo, campaign, website, or marketing department. It lives in how leaders lead, how employees experience the company, how teams make decisions, how salespeople sell, how customers are treated, and how the company shows up when the script runs out.

That means humanity cannot be manufactured at the end of the process with warmer copy or a friendlier visual identity. The external promise has to be an authentic expression of the leadership, culture, choices, and behavior behind it.

The goal is not to make every brand sound soft, casual, or sentimental. A human brand can be bold, restrained, exacting, rebellious, playful, or serious. It simply has to be true, distinctive, and meaningful to the people it serves.

The goal is not to appear human. The goal is to behave humanly.

The origin

We didn't create Brand Humanity because we were afraid of AI.

We created it because we believe humans and AI can make each other better.

Anthony and I have spent our careers helping companies build categories, brands, teams, communities, and moments that move people. We have also watched marketing become more automated, measurable, and efficient. And, too often, more transactional and interchangeable.

AI accelerates that tension. It gives every company extraordinary new capacity. It can research, synthesize, produce, personalize, coordinate, and execute at a scale most teams could never reach before. That is real progress. But when everyone has access to similar intelligence and infinite production, competence alone stops being a meaningful advantage.

Brand Humanity is our answer to the question underneath all of that change: What becomes more valuable when execution becomes abundant?

Our answer is humanity: judgment, empathy, emotion, creativity, taste, trust, conviction, connection, shared experience, and the courage to make choices that reveal who you really are.

I co-created Brand Humanity with my good friend Anthony Kennada, one of the most incredible marketers I've ever known, and one of the best humans. He is an extraordinary husband and dad. That matters here. Brand Humanity was never going to be credible if it came only from how we thought about campaigns. It grew from how we try to lead, create, show up for people, and build lives around the work, not beneath it.

Why now

AI is creating more of everything. That doesn't mean more of it will matter.

The risk is not simply that AI replaces tasks. It is that companies use the same tools, patterns, language, and optimization logic until their brands, and the work of the people building them, begin to blur together.

A rising sea of sameness

When polished execution becomes universally available, safe and generic work becomes easier to produce, and easier to ignore. Distinction has to come from a point of view, a set of choices, and a human truth competitors cannot simply prompt their way into.

Relationships reduced to transactions

Buyers become accounts. Employees become resources. Communities become channels. Personalization becomes a field inserted into a sequence. Efficiency may improve while trust, empathy, and genuine connection quietly disappear.

Human judgment outsourced too early

AI is excellent at extending capacity. It is not a substitute for conviction, taste, accountability, or the lived understanding of another person. When teams automate the decision instead of the labor around it, the work may become faster without becoming wiser.

Marketers losing themselves in the machine

Brand Humanity is also about the people doing the work. The goal of AI should not be to turn marketers into supervisors of endless content production. It should create more room for the parts of the craft that make the work worth doing: curiosity, ideas, judgment, relationships, creative risk, and the satisfaction of making something that matters.

A way of leading

A company cannot communicate humanity it does not practice.

Brand Humanity begins inside the company. Leadership creates the conditions. Culture turns those conditions into behavior. Go-to-market makes that behavior visible. Customer experience proves whether the promise was real.

When those layers align, a company feels coherent. Its values show up in decisions. Its message sounds like something only it could say. Its people know what they are building and why. Customers experience the same character the brand promised.

When they do not align, humanity becomes performance, and people can feel the gap.

Brand Humanity is not only a marketing strategy. It is a way of leading.

The framework

Six truths that make brands matter to people.

The six Human Truths turn the philosophy into a practical way to diagnose a brand, improve the work, and connect humanity to business outcomes.

  1. 01 · Brand Strategy

    Authenticity

Root the brand in something true: a real purpose, credible values, distinctive beliefs, and genuine understanding of the audience. Authenticity creates trust because the promise is supported by proof.

    From performance to credibility.

  2. 02 · Storytelling

    Emotion

Give people something to feel, not only something to process. Emotion turns facts into meaning and messages into memories, without manipulating the audience or substituting sentiment for substance.

From information to engagement and recall.

  3. 03 · Team Alignment

    Purpose

Make the reason behind the work clear enough that people can believe in it and act on it together. Purpose aligns leaders, employees, partners, and the market around more than a set of activities.

    From activity to shared direction.

  4. 04 · Taste

    Creativity

Use judgment, originality, and restraint to create something only this company would make. Creativity is not decoration. It is how a brand escapes the average and earns attention without demanding it.

    From competent to distinctive.

  5. 05 · Audience Engagement

    Connection

Treat communication as the beginning of a relationship, not the completion of a transaction. Connection grows when companies listen, respond, contribute, and show up consistently where people already care.

    From reach to relationship.

  6. 06 · Shared Experiences

    Belonging

Create meaningful ways for people to participate, contribute, and see themselves as part of something larger. Belonging turns an audience into a community and customers into advocates.

From audience to community and advocacy.

What changes

Humanity is not the soft alternative to performance. It is how performance becomes harder to copy.

Applied well, Brand Humanity helps companies address problems that better production alone cannot solve.

  • Generic positioning becomes a distinctive point of view grounded in truth.
  • Forgettable messaging becomes a narrative people can understand, feel, and remember.
  • Inconsistent leadership and brand behavior become a coherent promise people can trust.
  • Content volume without impact becomes creative work shaped by taste and intention.
  • Transactional go-to-market becomes a system that earns relationships, not only responses.
  • Disconnected teams gain a shared purpose and clearer decisions.
  • Automated customer journeys protect the moments that still require empathy, judgment, and a real person.
  • Marketers overwhelmed by production use AI to recover time for deeper thinking, craft, and connection.

The goal is not less AI. It is more intentional AI, and more space for humans to do the work only humans can do.

Put it to work

Brand Humanity becomes valuable when it changes what a company does.

I help leaders and teams turn Brand Humanity from a belief into a practical operating advantage: connecting leadership, culture, brand, go-to-market, and customer experience to real decisions and measurable outcomes.

  1. 01

    Find the humanity gap

Diagnose where the brand has become generic, transactional, emotionally flat, internally inconsistent, or overly automated, then identify the Human Truth that matters most.

  2. 02

Align the inside and the outside

Clarify the leadership beliefs, audience truths, purpose, values, and behaviors that must support the external promise.

  3. 03

Turn truth into strategy and work

Apply the framework to positioning, strategic narrative, messaging, launches, founder brand, sales motions, customer experiences, events, community, and the moments that shape how people experience the company.

  4. 04

Decide what AI should, and should not, do

Design a deliberate division of labor: automate repetitive production and coordination, augment human thinking, keep consequential moments human-led, and protect the rare interactions where automation would undermine trust or meaning.

  5. 05

    Measure what changed

Connect human signals such as trust, resonance, participation, and advocacy to behavioral and business outcomes such as recall, conversion, alignment, pipeline, retention, and growth.

Brand Humanity + Duet

Duet is where the philosophy becomes a way of working.

Duet is built on the belief that the future is not humans or AI. It is humans and AI working together, each doing what they do best.

Brand Humanity gives that collaboration a point of view. AI can expand capacity across research, synthesis, production, personalization, and coordination. Humans remain responsible for judgment, empathy, taste, relationships, accountability, and the choices that give a brand meaning.

Inside Duet, company context helps AI understand what makes the business and its audience distinct. Digital Twins and agents bring specialized intelligence to the work. Human operators add craft, perspective, and last-mile judgment. Brand Humanity acts as a governing layer that helps the system create more without making the company feel like everyone else.

Automate
Repetitive production, formatting, research support, and coordination
Augment
Use AI to strengthen human strategy, creativity, analysis, and decisions
Human-led
Keep humans accountable for judgment, empathy, taste, trust, and relationships
Human-only
Protect rare moments where automation would diminish the experience itself

Use AI to scale your capacity without automating away what makes your brand, or your work, matter.

The human edge

This is about preserving the humanity of the people doing the work, too.

I love what AI makes possible. I also believe we have a responsibility to decide what we are trying to make possible with it.

The best outcome is not simply more output from fewer people. It is more time for the work that requires us to be fully present: understanding another person, forming a conviction, making a difficult choice, developing taste, building trust, creating something original, and being there when being there matters.

For marketers, founders, and operators, the question is not only, “What can I automate?” It is also, “What part of myself do I want this technology to help me become more of?”

AI should give us more capacity to be human, not less reason to be.

Build what AI can't replace.

The Brand Humanity Lab helps you examine the humanity of the work, and the way you're making it. Bring a campaign, website, sales motion, launch, experience, or AI workflow and identify the human moments worth strengthening and protecting.
